Program Description:
National Taiwan University

Becoming National Taiwan University (NTU) in 1945, the university is the first integrated and most prestigious institution of higher education in Taiwan. NTU has taken up the responsibility of promoting the level of academic research study and teaching putting emphasis on scholarly research in basic theory and academic thought.

NTU offers a multitude of engineering courses to choose from in the NTU College of Engineering.  However, this exchange is only with the Department of Civil Engineering.  These students are sure to find a wide range of excellent and interesting classes at NTU.

Location

The National Taiwan University is located in Taipei’s Da’an District. The 300 year-old city is coming of age. With Chinese, Japanese and Western influences in its food, culture, folk arts and architecture, Taipei manifests the mix that is Taiwan. Aside from streets filled with markets and restaurants, day trips from the city include tea fields, hot springs, river parks and colonial towns backed by a mountainous national park. Within Taipei, do not miss the Minnan-style temples filled with unique decorative arts, the heritage lanes turned gourmet café and boutique centers, the buzzing neon neighborhoods or the nightlife scene all growing in reputation yearly.

Courses

One of the benefits of participating in the exchange program at NTU is the wide range of courses available. However, there are a very limited number of courses taught in English during the semester. The majority are taught in Chinese. Additionally, students are able to take Chinese language courses during the semester.

A list of courses offered through the NTU College of Engineering can be found at this link. All students from Texas A&M University must get their courses approved by their home universities prior to the start of their program.

Housing

University accommodations are guaranteed. Exchange students have the option to live in university housing at the Prince Housing Dormitories (BOT) or the Guo Qing Dorm (also called the International Youth Center, IYC). The Prince House Dormitories have two locations: ChanHsing and ShuiYuan. Since the exchange to NTU is departmental, students placed in the Prince House will stay in the ChangHsing dorm located across the street from campus. Internet and water are included in rent pricing, but students must pay for electricity separately. On the other hand, Guo Qing Dorm is the only on-campus dorm for exchange students and is located on the northeast section of the campus.

The Prince Houses have the option of single suite with communal kitchen, single suite with private bath and twin suit with shared bath as different room types. Guo Wing only has twin shared suits with some rooms having a communal bath and the others having a private bath shared by the two roommates. See the International Student Guide for more on housing and other important information.

Costs

One of the benefits of participating in a reciprocal exchange is their affordability. Overall costs are comparable to studying in College Station with the main difference in costs coming from travel related expenses and the exchange rate. Please keep in mind that because you are enrolled at A&M, your regular tuition and fees will be paid at A&M just as if you were taking classes on campus. Additionally, students will be provided with the necessary information for them to make arrangements for all other expenses.

Thoughts from a Former Exchange Student

"I decided to study abroad as a means of diversifying my professional skills, not to mention my career opportunities. Studying abroad is one of the best ways to broaden one's awareness of the complex issues surrounding this new international/global era in which we live. It helped me perfect my language skills and gain knowledge of the political, social, and economic issues the world faces today. Furthermore, I believe the personal experiences I gained will help me to be a better leader to welcome challenges, and to challenge the status quo."
Former Texas A&M Exchange Student
