Texas A&M Student Leadership Exchange Program
2017-2018 Program Information

The Student Leadership Exchange Program (SLEP) seeks student leaders to participate in a week-long, life-changing inter- and cross-cultural experience. Selected students will spend one week hosting students from Texas A&M-Qatar (March 2 – March 9, 2018), then travel to Doha over Spring Break (March 9 – March 17, 2018) to experience life and culture in Qatar. Through it all, students will be challenged to develop a deeper understanding of leadership in a global context.
 
Participants
There will be up to 12 participants from each campus traveling during their respective Spring Break. Once more, anticipated travel dates are March 2 – March 9, 2018 (TAMU-Q visits Bryan / College Station) and March 9 – March 17, 2018 (TAMU-CS visits Doha, Qatar). The planning committee strives for a diverse group of participants who are representative of students at Texas A&M University.
 
Program Outcomes
  • Participate in meaningful dialogue between students from the Qatar and College Station campuses
  • Be exposed to different concepts in leadership and the cultural relevance of leadership
  • Collaborate with a diverse group in a shared experience 
  • Synthesize learning from leadership workshops, cultural experiences, and individual reflections throughout the program
  • Understand and increase the notion of what it means to be an individual of certain identities in a global world and in different contexts and geographic locations of this world 

Criteria
  • Applicants of the Student Leadership Exchange Program should meet the following criteria:
  • Current Passport in hand by October 30th with a minimum of a year before the expiration date
  • Undergraduate student status in good standing with the University
  • A GPR of 3.0 or higher
  • Freshmen, sophomore, junior, or senior classification, but not graduating prior to December 2018
  • Leadership experience in student organizations
  • Attendance at approximately 6 mandatory pre-departure meetings held from 8:00 – 9:00 am on Friday mornings during the Spring 2018 semester  (January 26th, February 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, March 2nd), and 1 post experience meeting (March 23rd)
  • Preferred: No previous travel to Qatar or the region; and has traveled outside of the US no more than 2 times.
  • Upon return, participants will give a presentation on what they experienced and learned during the program 
Requirements
Selected participants are expected to:
  • Attend all trip preparation and reciprocal exchange pre-departure meetings prior to leaving for Qatar
  • Attend a post trip meeting to wrap up the experience
  • Serve as a representative of Texas A&M University and abide by all University, student, and trip rules and policies
  • Actively attend and participate in required events with Texas A&M – Qatar students while they are visiting Bryan / College Station (March 2 – March 9, 2018)
  • Actively participate in activities, events, and experiences while visiting Doha (March 9 – March 17, 2018) 

Applications:
The application for the Student Leadership Exchange is due no later than 11:59pm, Wednesday, October 4, 2017.  Applications received after this time / date will not be considered.
 
Costs
Selected participants are responsible for supporting $1,100 of their trip expenses, plus any spending money. In previous years, many students have received support from various colleges and departments on campus. Interest free loans have also been historically available through the Memorial Student Center’s L.T. Jordan Institute for International Awareness.
